Cortella Flavius

Flavio Cortella, born in Sarmede in the Treviso area, began to draw and color from an early age when he invented his "fantastic little theaters" with the help of cut-out figures.

Growing up he entered the world of art, especially fantastic art and decoration that fascinate him a lot. In 1972 he met Stepan Zavrel, who had recently settled in Rugolo, on the hills of Sarmede.

With him she gets to know the world of illustration, engraving, animated films, and finally with the fresco she can exercise her passion for decoration.

Naturally, the desire to illustrate popular stories and fairy tales was born from this partnership, inserting his fantasy world into the images.

He always cultivates his interest in decoration by exploring the world of Klimt, Morris, Zecchin, Fortuny, Chini, illuminated manuscripts, Byzantine mosaics, mosaic and Cosmatesque floors, and all that man has produced by decorating.

In 1978 he arrived in Venice, where he still lives.

The city becomes a continuous stimulus for his artistic training.

Illustrating stories becomes a limit, he thinks of probing the world of sensations, feelings, fears, desires, he would like to explore them and "describe" them with images, without abandoning the decoration, which has become his source of inspiration.

This is how the images of this exhibition are born. In his watercolors he expressed his feelings, his fears, his desire for freedom…. himself.
